Laboratory Manager

Our client, John Thompson & Sons Ltd currently have a vacancy for a laboratory Manager.

JOB PURPOSE:

This role will impact on thesuccess of the company through the effective management of the laboratory function and the timely delivery of a high performance, total quality service to ensure ongoing customer satisfaction.

Education & Knowledge

Essential
• The candidate should hold a third level qualification, or equivalent, in Chemistry, Food Technology or Agricultural Science
• Knowledge of UKAS standards
Desirable
• Knowledge of risk assessments and The 17025:2005 Standard
• Holds an ECDL qualification or equivalent

Experience

Essential
• At least 2 years supervisory experience in a laboratory environment
• Experience in Tests Methods and Nutritional Analysis
• Competent in the use of Windows based computer packages
Desirable
• Experience in a continuous improvement environment
• Experience in the use of LIMS
• Experience in managing budgets and/or business units

Circumstances

• A flexible approach to work is required
• The role may require participation in client visits and some travel through the UK / EU

Duties and Responsibilities

• Effective management of laboratory staff
• Carrying out analysis within the laboratory to meet internal and external customer requirements.
• Deputising for Technical Manager duties when necessary
• Monitoring and communicating performance against departmental KPI’s
• Internal auditing of Laboratory practices against ISO17025 standard.
• Working closely with other Laboratories in the Group?
• Timely support and active pursuit of business development activities
• The laboratory complies with all legislative and regulatory requirements in relation to: ISO 9001; ISO 14001; UKAS ISO17025; COSHH; Feed Hygiene
• Maintenance and development of the scope of the Company’s UKAS approval
• Budgets and costs are analysed and reviewed to maximise output
• Benchmarking activities are carried out as required to assess market conditions
• Purchasing of resources on a timely basis to support requirements
• On time delivery of test results and reports to meet customer requirements
• Customer support and advice as required
• Maintenance and calibration of laboratory equipment is arranged and carried out as required
• Management of testing in accordance with SOP’s
• Management and auditing of validation processes
• Management of projects as required
• Laboratory waste is managed and disposed of in line with operational procedures
• Existing and new methods of analysis are developed and implemented as agreed
• Management and monitoring of the LIMS system
• Recruitment, training, development, multi-skilling, evaluation and support of the laboratory team
• All housekeeping activities are adhered to
• Accurate and timely production of monthly laboratory performance analysis reports
• Assist in the effective measurement of customer satisfaction and implementation of continuous improvement activities
• All company policy is complied with and supported
• All Health & safety procedures are adhered to in the laboratory and mill
• Personal training and development needs are identified with supervisor
• All relevant training is attended
• Induction, company training and appraisal is supported as required
• Any other duties are carried out as appropriate
